Yellow Moong Dal

  • 1 cup moog dal
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 1/2 tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 cumin seeds
  • 1 garlic chopped
  • 1 medium tomato chopped
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder mild
  • 4 tbsp plain yogurt
  • salt per taste
  • To Garnish - chopped coriander, fried onion rings and fresh red chilli


  1. Wash moog dal with water. Add 4 cups of water, turmeric and washed moong dal to a pot and bring it to boil. Once it gets foam, reduce the heat to medium/low and let it cook for 20 min. uncovered. Keep removing foam from the top.
  2. Remove from the heat once the dal is boiled and soft.
  3. In a different pan, heat ghee. Add cumin seeds and chopped garlic. Once the garlic is golden in color, add chopped tomato, garam masala and chilli powder. Cook on medium heat for 5 min. or until tomatoes are softened and mashed.
  4. Add boiled dal, one cup of water and salt. Cook for 5 more min.
  5. Add yogurt and cook for another 5 minutes.
  6. Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with fried onion rings, coriander and fresh red chilli.
  7. Serve with Rice or bread.
